Another problem with WiFi is that companies often have many clients working in a confined space, which quickly affects the bandwidth and reliability of data exchange. With wired networks, this "shared medium" problem can be eliminated by using switches. In addition, cables are also preferable to wireless connections for security reasons.

The central objective of structured network cabling is not only to provide capacity reserves, but also to support modern communication technologies. However, the simple installation and connection of network components are also essential factors in network planning.

In principle, structured cabling can be divided into three levels. These levels consist of premises, building and floor cabling. Whereas the ground cabling connects individual buildings with each other, individual floors are networked in the building cabling. Due to the small number of stations, mainly fiber optic cables are used in the area cabling. In building cabling, copper cables are also used. It is important that a length of ninety meters is not exceeded when using twisted pair cables (CAT5 / CAT5e / CAT6 / CAT6).
